The United States central bank reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank
The move to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.
Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves
The Fed typically studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August.
The number of positions added to the economy in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.
Private Data Indicate Ongoing Decline
Though BLS was set to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication when the closure started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the business segment cut 32,000 jobs in September, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase
Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are going up, although slowly. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
